The safety of the user comes first: avoiding, reducing and correcting errors – this is possible with human-centered design of medical devices. It also results in improved efficiency, a high level of user satisfaction and, as a result, better patient care. The implementation of regulatory requirements, such as those stipulated by IEC 62366, is also more successful with human-centered design.

User research is the foundation of a medical application. Using user studies, a UX design team gains insights into the needs, challenges and preferences of patients and healthcare professionals. For successful and safe operation, it is essential to validate and improve UX concepts and medical prototypes at an early stage. We verify and validate medical technology in formative and summative evaluations in accordance with IEC 62366. A suitable user research strategy for a medical product or digital health service ranges from recruiting and the choice of methods to specific validation and recommendations.

Whether diabetes, asthma or high blood pressure – the success of medical treatments depends largely on whether patients are motivated to cooperate. Digital health applications (DiGA), i.e. apps on prescription, have great potential to increase treatment adherence. Manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and medical devices are opening up new areas of business with these digital services.

The acceptance of such health apps stands and falls with good usability and user experience. Medical devices are often subject to stringent requirements – and rightly so, as they are concerned with people’s health. Accordingly, these should also be the focus of development. User-centered design in accordance with IEC 62366 and software development in accordance with IEC 62304 are essential for successful certification.
