SAFE AND ATTRACTIVE
ALLROUNDER
The rapid test reader from QIAGEN uses test strips to evaluate liquids according to various characteristics. The concept developed by UID makes optimum use of the embedded device’s 4-inch display and is therefore suitable for any operating situation – whether in the laboratory, in a medical practice or on police patrol. The fresh design stands out in the medical environment and is an eye-catcher.
Coherent concept meets advanced design
Coherent concept meets advanced design
The development of the concept and design presented the UID experts with a number of challenges. From doctors and laboratory staff to police officers on patrol: the rapid test reader (for analyzing lateral flow tests) is used internationally in various professional fields by users, some of whom are untrained. Speed and absolute error-proofing are a must. The 4-inch display and limited computing performance posed additional challenges.
Despite all the limitations, UID developed a stringent concept that guides users safely through the test process and reduces the information displayed to the essentials at every step. The design is an eye-catcher: with its intense colors, it stands out from rather soberly designed medical applications – and provides a differentiating feature compared to competitors in a saturated market.
“
“QIAGEN made a conscious decision to go for a bold design in the pragmatic medical environment. The great collaboration with Qiagen has resulted in a great product that has already been very well received in initial customer meetings!”
Steffen Neumann, Lead UX Design at UID
The process
UID’s concept and design convinced QIAGEN across the board. For a user experience from a single source, QIAGEN also commissioned the UID software engineers: they implemented initial components (controls, screens and view models) of the touch interface with Qt and developed the interface for later integration into an embedded device.
The team
Different operating situations, small display, embedded device – the requirements challenged the UID experts and raised a number of questions. For example, how do you manage to implement a keyboard on a small display that can be operated reliably and conveniently by touch despite technical limitations? In intensive collaboration between designers, UX experts and software engineers, we found convincing solutions.
Fast and absolutely safe
The interface guides even unskilled users step by step through the operating process.
Advenced Design
Color gradients and well-organized tiles–the new interface is also a visual highlight.
White Label Design
Qiagen’s customers can adapt the user interface design to their own corporate design.
Motion Design
Animations show users which phase of the test evaluation they are in.
Flexible screen results
Depending on the number of test results, the user is shown a corresponding view.
Design language
The UID design picks up on the metaphor of blood cells and focuses on a round design language.
